Singular dan Plural Noun

Singular Noun  ( BENDA TUNGGAL ) adalah kata-kata yang jumlahnya hanya satu, dimana sebuah kata merujuk kepada satu orang, tempat, benda, maupun ide. Misalnya, bola, satu, wanita.

Pada umumnya singular noun selalu diawali oleh article (kata sandang) a atau an, sebelum kata benda tunggal khususnya untuk benda dapat dihitung dan dimulai dengan huruf mati (konsonan). Yang termasuk dalam kata benda tunggal adalah semua kata benda yang tidak mengalami perubahan atau tidak mengalami penambahan s atau es. Adapun contoh dari singular noun adalah :

• He is a teacher (dia adalah seorang guru).
• She doesn’t own a car (dia tidak memiliki mobil).
• I saw a bear at the zoo (sata melihat beruang di kebun binatang).

Namun, ada juga artikel (kata sandang) an yang digunakan sebelum kata benda tunggal dan dapat dihitung yang dimulai dengan bunyi huruf vocal. Contohnya adalah :

• He is an actor (dia adalah seorang actor).
• She didn’t get an invitation (dia tidak mendapat undangan).
• I saw an eagle at the zoo (saya melihat seekor elang di kebun binatang).

(Plural Noun ) ( BENDA JAMAK )

Berbeda dengan singular noun, plural noun adalah kata benda yang digunakan untuk menunjukan bahwa benda tersebut lebih dari satu. Pada umumnya dibentuk dari kata benda tunggal dengan memberikan tambahan s/es pada kata bendanya. Contohnya : balls, they, women.

Ada 6 aturan yang harus di ingat ketika mengeja atau membentuk kata benda jamak (plural noun). Yang mana, peraturannya berdasarkan huruf di akhir kata, antara lain :

• Untuk sebagian besar kata benda tunggal, dengan menambahkan akhiran “s” di akhir kata benda. Contohnya : monkey – monkeys, pencil – pencils, girl – girls.
• Dengan menambahkan akhiran “es” pada kata benda tunggal yang diakhiri dengan s, x, z, sh, atau ch. Contohnya : gas – gases, box – boxes, waltz – waltzes, brush – brushes, church – churches.
• Mengubah akhiran “y” yang diawali oleh huruf mati (konsonan) pada kata benda tunggal menjadi akhiran “i” dan kemudian ditambah “es”. Contohnya: sky – skies, army – armies, boy – boys, alley – alleys.
• Untuk kata benda yang berakhiran “f” atau “fe” dengan menambahkan “s” atau kata benda berakhiran “f” atau “v” dengan menambahkan “s” atau “es”. Contohnya : belief – beliefs, roof – roofs, loaf – loaves, life – lives, knife – knives.
• Untuk kata benda yang diakhiri dengan huruf “o” dengan menambahkan “s” atau “es”. Satu trik yang perlu diingat jika ada hubungannya dengan suara maka cukup dengan menambahkan “s”. contohnya : cello – cellos, piano – pianos, radio – radios, potato – potatoes, tomato – tomatoes.
• Ada beberapa kata benda yang memiliki bentuk jamak tidak beraturan (irregular plural form). Contohnya : man – men, woman – women, child – children, foot – feet, tooth – teeth.
