Report Text adalah teks yang mendeskripsikan sesuatu atau benda-benda secara umum, contohnya berbagai benda atau fenomena alam, buatan dan sosial yang ada atau terjadi di lingkungan kita. Teks report mengupas suatu hasil pengamatan, penelaahan, penelitian, observasi, atau study tentang benda atau binatang, orang atau tempat. 

Report Text hampir sama dengan Descriptive Text yang membedakan adalah objek yang diceritakan berbentuk jamak, sedangkan objek yang diceritakan pada Descriptive Text berbentuk tunggal. 

Generic Structure Report Text adalah :
1. General classification (Klasifikasi umum) : pengantar tentang sesuatu atau fenomena yang akan dibahas.
2. Description (Deskripsi) : menerangkan sesuatu atau fenomena yang dibahas, meliputi bagian-bagian, kualitas dan perilaku.

Ciri-ciri Report Text adalah :
1. Menggunakan pola kalimat Simple Present Tense
2. Menggunakan kata benda umum (general nouns)
3. Menggunakan kata kerja yang saling berhubungan (relating verbs)

4. Terdiri dari sebuah objek ditambah objek tentang alam lainnya.

CONTOH TEKS REPORT  DAN PENJELASAN GENERIC STRUCTURE 

Komodo Dragon”

Do you know what is the largest lizard? This lizard is called komodo. It lives in the scrub and woodland of a few Indonesian islands.

Komodo dragon is the world’s heaviest lizard, weighing 150 pounds or more. The largest Komodo ever measured was more than 10 feet (3 meters) long and weighed 366 pounds (166 kg) but the average size of komodo in the wild is about 8 feet (2.5 meters) long and 200 pounds (91 kg)

Komodo has gray scaly skin, a pointed snout, powerful limbs and a muscular tail. They use their keen sense of smell to locate decaying animal remains from several miles away. They also hunt other lizards as well as large mammals and are sometimes cannibalistic.

The Komodo dragon’s teeth are almost completely covered by its gums. When it feeds, the gums bleed, creating an ideal culture for virulent bacteria. The bacteria that live in the Komodo dragon’s saliva causes septicemia, or blood poisoning, in its victims. A dragon will bite its prey, then follow it until the animal is too weak to carry on.

This lizard species is threatened by hunting, loss of prey species and habitat loss.

Struktur Umum (General Structure) dari Report Text dengan Tema Hewan

Dalam suatu report text, terdapat struktur yang dibagi menjadi 2 bagian, yaitu

1. general classification 

2. description.. 

Masing-masing bagian dari text di atas dapat dijelaskan seperti di bawah ini:

Bagian General Classification merupakan bagian yang menunjukkan berbagai pernyataan umum mengenai objek yang sedang dibicarakan. Pada teks di atas, objek yang dibicarakan adalah Komodo dan bagian general classification ditunjukkan pada bagian “Do you know what is the largest lizard? This lizard is called komodo. It lives in the scrub and woodland of a few Indonesian islands.” Atau dengan kata lain, bagian general classification dari teks di atas tercantum pada paragraf pertama teks.

Selanjutnya, bagian description adalah bagian yang menjelaskan mengenai informasi mendetail dari objek yang dibicarakan dalam detail. Teks di atas membicarakan mengenai informasi detail dari Komodo dimulai dari paragraf 2 hingga paragraf terakhirnya.

SOAL:

“Jakarta City”

Jakarta is a capital city of Indonesia. Jakarta is located on the northwest Java.

The most popular food in Jakarta are Kerak Telor, Ketoprak, and Soto Betawi. There are so many cultural in Jakarta. There are many old buildings there.

But now, Jakarta has influenced by Globalization. Globalization gives many Impact. Negative impact and positive impact. There are many positive impact. But, because the positive impact, there are many negative impact too.

An example of positive impact is, there are a lot of tourist that goes vacation to Jakarta. and then, the tourist will see Indonesian culturals, old buildings, and many gives. But, from that positive impact, the negative impact is rivers in Indonesian especially Jakarta, the rivers are polluted by waste. And if Jakarta is rainy, there are always flood.
